Rehabilitation of Rang Saint-Charles using Geo-9 R2

Project

Rehabilitation work was carried out on a portion of Rang Saint-Charles in the Municipality of Saint-Patrice. The project aimed to improve the load-bearing capacity and stability of a roadway that regularly becomes impassable during certain periods of the year.

Challenge

Year after year, the aging roadway experienced significant deterioration due to the poor quality of its foundation materials. During thaw periods, the subgrade became saturated with water and lost its load-bearing capacity. Complete reconstruction of the roadway would have represented very high costs for the municipality; therefore, a high-performance, targeted, and cost-effective solution was sought.

Selected design concept

In the presence of unstable soils with low bearing capacity, the Geo-9 R2 geocomposite was selected to provide separation, reinforcement, filtration, and drainage of the existing soil. The roadway was regraded, and the Geo-9 R2 was installed across the full width with a minimum overlap of 300 mm, followed by the placement of a minimum 300 mm layer of high-quality granular material. Ditch regrading was also incorporated into the design to ensure efficient water drainage.

Benefits

The use of Geo-9 R2 allows for the separation of the existing subgrade from the fill layer while reinforcing the in-situ soil. In addition, the hydraulic properties of Geo-9 R2, with its low filtration opening (maximum 65 microns), help prevent the migration of fine particles into the base course, while its radial transmissivity facilitates the evacuation of water toward the side ditches. This results in increased durability of the roadway structure, reduced maintenance costs, and the preservation of good riding quality for users.

The use of the Geo-9 R2 geocomposite makes it possible to:

  • Avoid excavation of the entire unstable soil;
  • Limit the quantity of fill material required to achieve the same bearing capacity;
  • Enable fast and cost-effective construction;
  • Maintain good riding quality at a lower cost.
